Garden Climate

wanttogetupgoahead asked: Where do you guys live? What types of things can you plant in your climate?

We live in Santa Cruz, California and our house is only a couple blocks from the beach. Our USDA Hardiness zone is 9 and our sunset climate zone is 17 (our winters are not very cold, and our summers are not very hot).

We are pretty new to gardening, and aren’t really sure what is best in our area yet, although a lot of the farms around here grow strawberries, raspberries, broccoli, artichokes, garlic, lettuce, apples… and pretty much everything else I can think of!

I found these statistics about top grossing crops in the county, although what is grown in the area has changed historically and is dictated more by market conditions and competition than climate, as far as I’m aware…

Santa Cruz County 2008 Top Crops:

Strawberries $160.3M, Raspberries $105.8M, Misc. vegetables $39M, Indoor cut flowers $36.2M, Landscape plants $30.1M, Misc. berries $21M, Other plants* $18.4M, Field flowers $16.8M, Apples $10.1M, Livestock $8.1M.
